Don Prudencio Unanue & his wife Carolina

The story of Goya is one of family, values, and the pursuit of the American dream. In 1936, Don Prudencio Unanue and his wife Carolina—immigrants who first migrated to Puerto Rico from Spain—opened a small storefront on Duane Street in Lower Manhattan. Driven by the belief that there was a growing demand for high-quality, fresh-tasting Latin foods, they began serving local Hispanic families with authentic Spanish products, starting with olives, olive oil, and sardines.

As Hispanic communities expanded across New York and the United States, Goya grew alongside them. The company relocated from Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn in 1958 and later established its current headquarters in New Jersey in 1974. Today, Goya operates 26 state-of-the-art manufacturing and distribution facilities across the United States, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Spain, employing more than 4,000 people worldwide.

Through strategic research, marketing, sales, and public relations efforts, Goya has positioned its diverse product lines as a trusted brand among both Hispanic and general market consumers. Once found primarily in bodegas and small specialty stores, Goya products are now available nationwide in major retailers, including Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale, reflecting the brand’s strength and continued crossover into mainstream America.

Goya has always been driven by a passion for giving back. Through Goya Gives, the company’s charitable initiative, Goya supports nearly 300 programs, scholarships, and events, while donating millions of pounds of food to communities in need—especially during times of natural disaster. Goya also recognizes the responsibility businesses have to lead environmental change and is the largest user of solar energy among Hispanic-owned food and beverage companies, ranking among the top corporate solar users in the U.S. food and beverage industry.

For 90 years, Goya has remained steadfast in its mission to be the brand of choice for authentic Latin cuisine, while staying true to its family-oriented values and deep roots in the culinary traditions of Hispanic communities around the world.
